Depression is one of the most common mental health issues in America, affecting over 16 million people annually. In 2015, it was estimated that 6.7 percent of adults and 12.7 percent of teens have or will struggle with depression this year.
There have been several pharmaceutical breakthroughs in recent years, but the most recent FDA-approved treatment isn’t a medication, but a machine.
Read about this revolutionary 3-minute therapy below.
3-Minute TMS Treatment
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) has been an FDA-approved treatment for depression since 2008. However, its relatively long treatment duration (40-60 minutes) has inhibited its adoption by therapists and patients.
The new 3-minute form uses Theta Burst Stimulation (TBS) to deliver the same treatment faster. Aptly named “Express TMS®,” this discovery has created a viable and accessible option for patients.
The treatment consists of in-person sessions in which magnets are placed on the head to deliver targeted pulses to your brain. This stimulation excites neurons and mood-regulators and may improve depression.
To get FDA clearance, MagVenture, owner of the new 3-minute technology, conducted a clinical study in which 400+ patients volunteered. The results concluded that the new TBS protocol achieved a 32 percent remission rate and a 49 percent improvement in depressive symptoms. According to MagVenture, these rates are similar to the standard rTMS treatment.
